Al Horford will opt-out of the final year of his contract with the Celtics, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Horford would have made $30.1 million had he opted-in for the 2019-20 season.
This decision from Horford was expected by the Celtics. Just over two weeks ago, Danny Ainge expressed restructuring things with Horford was one of the Celtics’ priorities. There’s a chance Horford could leave with Kyrie Irving’s departure from Boston looking more and more likely each day — leading some to believe the Celtics won’t be contenders in 2019-20 and perhaps in years to follow.
Though, based on Ainge’s comment, along with Woj’s report stating, “Horford and the Celtics both have interest in working toward a new deal in July,” it seems this will result in Horford re-signing on a team-friendly deal with more years tacked on.
