When Celtics veterans talk about young players not getting it, inevitably they turn their cannons on third-year guard Jaylen Brown. In Tuesday’s demoralizing loss to the Raptors, they did it for the world to see.
In the first half of a 118-95 loss, Brown made an ill-advised assault on the basket in the open court with two Raptors defenders blocking his path. He sidestepped one before plowing over Kyle Lowry for an easy charge.
Meanwhile, Marcus Smart punched the air in frustration, wide open on the right wing for what should’ve been an obvious kick-out 3-pointer. He clapped his hands and immediately had words for Brown on the court, with teammate Marcus Morris joining as well. While there’s no question Brown made the wrong decision — he often plays out of control on drives to the hoop — it also wasn’t a great look for a Celtics team that seems to be collapsing from within.

The conversation continued during an ensuing stoppage, with Brown pleading his case that he thought he had a layup and Smart standing his ground.
It’s yet another sign that as the playoffs approach, the Celtics haven’t come anywhere close to getting on the same page, and time is running out.
