Warriors coach Steve Kerr praises Celtics as 'team of the future in East'

At an NBA-best 12-2 out of the gate, the Celtics no longer take teams by surprise.

“They’re dialed in,” Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, whose club will square off with the Celtics at TD Garden on Thursday, said today. “They’re well-coached, obviously. Brad Stevens is amazing.”

An opposing coach praising Stevens is nothing new, of course, as Stevens has been on the receiving end of kind words from just about every successful NBA coach. But it was the makeup of this year’s team that’s left Kerr with some extra love to give to the C’s.

“I think Jaylen Brown in his second year has made huge strides. They add [Jayson> Tatum, so you have another long-armed guy who can switch,” Kerr noted. “And their bigs are really smart. Horford and Baynes are really sharp basketball players. They’re all on a string, they play off each other really well, they’re sound, and they’re motivated.

“They’re a team that’s been on the rise the last couple of years.”

The Celtics are not the first great Eastern Conference team that Kerr has wanted advanced scouting on in preparation for a potential NBA Finals showdown. He considered the then-imposing Bulls that one of the teams that an early Golden State team of his went up against to be a legitimate threat, only to see them fall out of frame and into NBA irrelevancy.

But Kerr, whose Warriors have gone against the Cavaliers in three straight NBA Finals, knows that the Celtics are not a one-and-done kind of franchise, and that Danny Ainge has set them up to be an Eastern Conference juggernaut as soon as this season.

Concluded Kerr: “It sure looks like Boston is the team of the future in the East with their assets they still have, their young talent, their talent, and Kyrie is amazing.”

The Celtics are 2-4 against the Warriors since Kerr took over as the team’s head coach in 2014.
