Walter McCarty says Jayson Tatum reminds him of Paul Pierce
Celtics rookie Jayson Tatum has impressed in Summer League play. So much, in fact, that his coach is comparing him to a franchise legend.
When asked Saturday about Tatum following the Celtics’ 86-81 victory over the Lakers, Walter McCarty said the No. 3 overall pick reminds him of Paul Pierce. Tatum scored 27 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the win.
“He reminds me a lot of Paul Pierce when he was young,” McCarty said, via MassLive. “He has that ability just to be cool. He doesn’t get too frantic. He doesn’t get nervous. He just lets the game come to him. And he’s got a quiet swag about him. It’s really fun to watch him when he does it. I get excited just watching him. And we’ve just got to keep building on that.”
McCarthy played with Pierce for eight seasons, so he’s speaking from an area of expertise. He also doesn’t appear to be the only person in the organization who views Tatum in that light. Last month, it was reported Danny Ainge was targeting the former Duke standout, because he thinks Tatum is “Pierce 2.0.”
Tatum, 19, is averaging 19 points and nine rebounds per game in Summer League play.
