Think Celtics fans are excited about the future of the team? You all have nothing on Tracy McGrady.
The Hall of Fame guard minced no words when describing the ceiling of the C’s on ESPN’s The Jump with Rachel Nichols.
“This team is going to be the Golden State of the East,” McGrady said. “They’re so deep. Even if they lose Marcus Smart, like, I’m trying to figure out their lineup for next year because either (Jayson) Tatum or (Jaylen) Brown is going to go to the bench. Their bench is going to be so deep.”
With Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward set to rejoin the team that missed a berth in the NBA Finals by just six minutes, the future really does feel limitless, particularly with potential lottery picks coming via Sacramento next year and Memphis down the road.
McGrady does wonder how coach Brad Stevens is going to disperse playing time across a loaded roster.
“He’s going to have to coach these guys like Pop coached the San Antonio Spurs, where he just has so much talent,” McGrady said. “I look for these guys to play no more than 30-35 minutes a night. . . . They’re going to be a serious problem in the Eastern Conference.”
