Terry Rozier tweets apparent cryptic trade request, then backtracks after outrage mounts

Terry Rozier may have unleashed one of the more passive aggressive trade requests in memory. The backup Celtics guard, who’s predictably seen his role diminish this season, tweeted Tuesday, “Let’s do us ALL a favor.” Considering the message came roughly 12 hours after the Celtics’ 117-112 loss to the Hornets, it seemed as if the cryptic missive was directed towards general manager Danny Ainge, ordering him to find another spot for Rozier.

Prior to the tweet, there were already murmurs about Rozier being unhappy with his relative lack of playing time and touches. Earlier this month, Bill Simmons reported Rozier wants out of Boston. Shams Charania of The Athletic followed up that seven teams are watching Rozier.

It wouldn’t be surprising if the Celtics dealt Rozier in order to clear space on their roster. He’s averaging 23.1 minutes per night and is behind both Kyrie Irving and Marcus Smart on the guard depth chart. The fourth-year man out of Louisville emerged as a dependable scorer for the Celtics in the playoffs, averaging 16.5 points per game during Boston’s extended run.

This season, Rozier is down to 8.4 points per night, lending further credence to his apparent trade request.

Later Tuesday morning, Rozier clarified his tweet, telling everyone to “chill with the bad talk.” But we will not chill, because it looks like this Celtics squad needs to be shaken up. Jettisoning Rozier might be the easiest way to achieve that.
