Stephen A. Smith thinks the Celtics are in jeopardy, unless Antoine Walker can get hot from outside.
OK, OK, I’m kidding about the last part. But you believed it, right? This is the guy who exclaimed Dwayne Haskins is “more of a runner” than thrower and warned football fans everywhere to watch out for Hunter Henry and Derrick Johnson in the big Chiefs-Chargers Thursday night showdown last season.
With that history in mind, you can never be sure whether Stephen A. actually watched the games he’s opining about on a daily basis. So take this for what it’s worth, but: Stephen A. doesn’t think the Celtics have a chance.
On “First Take” Wednesday, Smith predicted the Celtics’ impending doom following their Game 2 defeat. “The Boston Celtics are going back to Boston, and STILL, they’re in a world of trouble,” Smith said in his typical understated fashion. “It’s one thing to lose, it’s another thing to get beat up. Milwaukee lost Game 1; the Celtics got beat up in Game 2. That’s the difference.”
It’s hard to figure out Smith is referring to, since the Bucks and Celtics each lost their games by 21 and 22 points, respectively. In Game 2, the Celtics were within three points with 7:06 remaining in the third quarter, before they went scoreless for nearly the next five minutes. Milwaukee’s ballooned during that time frame, with Giannis Antetokounmpo knocking down threes for good measure.
Smith did bring up some decent points, such as the need for Jayson Tatum to step up and Gordon Hayward to score more than five points. Those are the takes that are worth more than $10 million annually.
It’s a good time to be a carnival barker.
