Skip Bayless thinks Celtics fans expect Gordon Hayward to be Larry Bird
Skip Bayless spent his Independence Day mocking Gordon Hayward and making wildly inaccurate assumptions about Celtics fans.
God bless the U.S.A.
The hot take flamethrower has taken a break this summer from chastising LeBron James, instead directing his misinformed ire towards the Celtics. It all started last month during the NBA Draft, when he went after point guard Isaiah Thomas. “As long as Isaiah Thomas is the PG, Celts ceiling will be pretty low. Terrific shooter, clutch shotmaker, but not great passer or defender,” he tweeted.
It’s ironic for Bayless to accuse another outfit of having a low ceiling, considering his “Undisputed” show on FS1 recently drew nearly 700,000 fewer viewers than Mickey Mouse Clubhouse’s “Minnie’s Birthday.” But a man who lives on the West Coast and keeps all of his clocks on Eastern Standard Time –– and 10 minutes ahead, no less –– doesn’t appear to possess a lot of self-awareness.
Bayless started firing his salvo towards Hayward just hours after he had come to terms with the Celtics. “Gordon Hayward is a nice player who had a breakout year. But I wouldn’t take him over a single player who made last yr’s East All-Star team,” he said Tuesday night, while most well-adjusted humans were outside watching fireworks and hanging out with family and friends.
The claim that the 27-year-old Hayward is a mediocre player who enjoyed one All-Star caliber season, rather than a star who’s realizing his potential in the prime of his career, is a textbook example of Bayless trolling. The Celtics have seemingly been praised unanimiously for their rapid turnaround, so it’s not surprising that Bayless is taking the contrarian route. After all, he still calls James a playoff choke artist, despite his three championship rings.
Bayless’ dissing of Hayward might be asinine, but it’s explainable. The barb he tossed towards Celtics fans, however, is not:
“I pity Gordon Hayward if Celtics fans expect him to have anywhere near Larry Bird impact on their team’s chances of winning the East,” Bayless wrote.
The problem with that scorching take, of course, is that nobody thinks Hayward is comparable to Bird. Bayless is arguing against his imagination, which is fitting, considering that’s the only place where he’s a star.
