Behind second-year player Semi Ojeleye’s team-high 21 points the Celtics held off the New York Knicks Thursday afternoon, 82-75 in summer league play.
The C’s built a lead as large as 21 points, but the Knicks battled back to get within four before the Celtics put the game away. New York did not hold a lead the whole contest.
Jabari Bird continued his impressive summer competing for a roster spot by pouring in 13 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Guerschon Yabusele contributed 12 points and five rebounds.
Ojeleye scored 11 points in his first seven minutes as the Celtics went on a 12-0 run in the first quarter. On the opposite end of the floor, the C’s held the Knicks to 16 points just about halfway into the second quarter.
New Knicks sensation and first-rounder Kevin Knox struggled in the game finishing with 15 points on 20 shots. Mitchell Robinson led the way for the Knicks scoring 17 points with 12 boards and six blocks. Allonzo Trier matched Robinson with 17 points, four boards and four assists.
Even without Celtics’ first-round pick Robert Williams in the game, the contest was a battle in the paint. The C’s put up 38 points in the paint, while the Knicks scored 36 down low. There’s been no update on Williams since Thursday. He’s being treated as day-to-day, the C’s will most likely be cautious with the rookie so he’s no guarantee moving forward.
Head coach Jay Larranaga and the Celtics move on to the second round of the summer league and will take on the Heat Saturday at 6:30.
