Reports: Celtics in ‘serious’ talks to trade No. 1 pick to Sixers
When the Celtics first landed the No. 1 overall pick, it seemed like a pretty safe bet that they’d keep the pick and draft Washington guard Markelle Fultz. But with less than a week to go until the draft, that now seems uncertain and maybe even unlikely.
Following a report that the Celtics were considering Kansas forward Josh Jackson at No. 1, a much bigger bombshell emerged Friday afternoon. ESPN’s Marc Stein and Zach Lowe and The Vertical’s Adrian Wojnarowski are all reporting that the Celtics are in serious discussions with the Philadelphia 76ers to trade the top pick.
Both outlets report that the package the Celtics would receive in return would include multiple draft picks, including this year’s No. 3 overall pick. Wojnarowski reports a future first-rounder would be included as well.
Things have apparently been moving quickly, as Wojnarowski reports that talks are far enough along that Fultz could be heading to Philadelphia for a meeting on Saturday.
If the Celtics are in love with Jackson, there’s certainly a chance they could still get him with the third pick, although they’d obviously be running the risk of the Lakers taking him over Lonzo Ball at two, or trading the pick to another team that would do that.
We’ll have more as this story develops.
