In the midst of trade talks surrounding the Kawhi Leonard sweepstakes, NBC Sports Boston’s A. Sherrod Blakely has reported it’s expected the Celtics will re-sign veteran forward Aron Baynes to a multi-year deal.
Blakely also pointed out that although the big man is set to hit free agency, he was still seen representing the Celtics at the NBA Award festivities on Monday. This comes only one season removed from when Baynes played his first major role in helping a team toward championship aspirations. Though he was indeed on the 2014 champion Spurs roster, Baynes emerged as a key bench player for the Celtics who brought a defensive post presence and occasionally got the start.
Signs point to the 31-year-old forward being on good terms with the Celtics, and can prove to be a key short-term signing if an agreement is reached. There may have been times throughout last season where Baynes would miss dunks and layups, but the big man has never backed down from protecting the paint, even if that means being on the receiving end of a poster dunk. Joel Embiid may boast about having the Celtics big on his highlight tape moving forward, but it can’t be denied that Baynes was a key cog in the Celtics defense toward significantly containing the Sixers All-Star center in the Eastern Conference semi-finals.
If re-signed, his effectiveness and loyalty to the team could prove to be a game changer for the Celtics who will look to begin its redemption year of an Eastern Conference Game 7 loss, come training camp.
