While it was reported that top prospect Markelle Fultz’s recent workout with the Celtics would be his only one, it appears there may be another team courting the University of Washington product.
According to the Sacramento Bee, Fultz will be working out with the Kings, who own the fifth and 10th picks in the upcoming June 22 NBA draft.
[UPDATE 1:45 p.m.]: According to James Ham of NBC Sports Bay Area, Fultz will not work out for the Kings this weekend, but there’s a chance for a visit to Sacramento between now and Draft night.
After going 32-50 last season, the Kings have been rumored to be shopping their picks in order to move up in the lottery, but this new development is an unexpected one.
Fultz, who said this week during his Boston visit, “it almost feels like I belong here,” is considered to be the consensus No. 1 pick. Danny Ainge and Celtics brass, who own the top pick, have stressed that they will consider all options over the next two weeks.
According to Ainge, a “handful of teams” have expressed interest in trading for the Celtics’ selection, and as his draft history has demonstrated, he is more than willing to make deals on draft night.
“There’s two things that are happening,” Ainge told the Boston Globe. “I think the value of [the pick] increases the closer you get to the draft is one, and two is we really need to know the value of the whole draft, because some of the conversations that you have are trading down in the draft and trading picks for players, moving backward and so forth. So we’re in the process of evaluating the whole draft, and we’re fielding phone calls.”
The Kings have had difficulty getting top prospects to workout with them in recent years, and thus Fultz’s Sacramento visit one is an important one for the franchise even if they are unable to land the 6-foot-4 guard.
