Greg Monroe is signing with the Boston Celtics, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski on Twitter Friday afternoon.
The 6-foot-11 center is expected sign a one-year, $5 million contract. Monroe was offered the chance to be the starting center for the New Orleans Pelicans while only making $2.2 million, but instead opted to play for a contender with less playing time guaranteed, sources tell Wojnarowksi.
Monroe’s former team, the Phoenix Suns, agreed to buy out his contract on the remainder of his $17.8 million salary this season after he cleared waivers on Friday. The 27-year-old averaged 11.2 points and eight rebounds in 23 minutes per game with the Suns this season.
