Report: Celtics will present Kelly Olynyk with qualifying offer
The Celtics may still say goodbye to Kelly Olynyk this offseason, but they’re not going to do it yet.
According to the Boston Herald’s Steve Bulpett, the Celtics will present the 7-footer with a qualifying offer by midnight’s deadline, making him a restricted free agent. That means Boston will retain right of first refusal if another club signs Olynyk to an offer sheet.
The Vertical’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported earlier this week the Celtics will likely jettison Olynyk so they can create more salary cap space. He would count for a $7.7 million cap hold if he remains on the roster. While the Celtics will almost definitely need that money to sign Gordon Hayward –– and especially to acquire both Hayward and Paul George –– it seems as if they’re going to keep their options open for the time being.
Olynyk, 26, averaged 9.0 points and 4.8 rebounds in 20.5 minutes per game last season. His highlight came in Game 7 against the Wizards, when he scored 26 points on 10-of-14 shooting. The Celtics selected Olynyk with the No. 13 overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft.
