Report: Celtics have placed obligatory call to Cavs regarding Kyrie Irving
The never ending roller coaster that is the NBA offseason kept on rolling this last week as reports have surfaced that Kyrie Irving has requested a trade from the Cavaliers.
Reports surrounding the reasons for Irving’s reported unhappiness have varied. Some claim he wants a bigger role and chance to prove himself outside of LeBron James’ shadow, while others speculate he is wary of LeBron’s potential departure following next season and doesn’t want to be stuck on another dysfunctional Cavaliers team.
When a talent such as Irving becomes available most teams will show interest. The Celtics are no different, as ESPN’s Zach Lowe reports the Celtics have made an “obligatory call”.
“Most teams, including the asset-rich Celtics, have placed the obligatory call letting Cleveland know they would like to be kept in the loop, sources say,” Lowe wrote. “Boston could offer Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder and one of their golden picks — Brooklyn’s pick next season, or the Lakers/Kings pick they got from Philly in the Markelle Fultz deal.”
While the call has been made, the likelihood of a deal remains slim, especially with an asking price as high as Lowe is proposing.
