The Celtics’ reported pursuit of Kawhi Leonard might be one of the hottest stories of this holiday weekend. Boston is “fully engaged” with the Spurs in trade talks for Leonard, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
“Boston has long had the assets that the Spurs most covet in a potential Leonard trade,” Woj tweets.
The Celtics have loads to offer, including Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. But on Wednesday, the Boston Herald’s Steve Bulpett reported Tatum and Brown were untouchable in any proposed Leonard deal. Boston could also build a package around Kyrie Irving, who will be a free agent next year, much like Leonard.
In addition to the Celtics, Wojnarowski reports the Lakers are pursuing Leonard as well. They would appear to be more desperate, given Magic Johnson’s guarantee he would acquire two superstar players over the next two summers. The Lakers reportedly think their chances of landing LeBron James hinges on whether they acquire Leonard.
With that in mind, the Lakers are seemingly more depserate to acquire Leonard. USA Today’s Sam Amick says they’re prepared to make a Godfather offer, which could include a combination of first-round picks Kyle Kuzma, Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart and future first-round selections.
The Celtics, meanwhile, can afford to view Leonard as a luxury. In a follow-up tweet, Wojnarowski says the Celtics are being “extremely cautious” in their pursuit of the two-time All-Star. “Celtics don’t have to make a risky trade and have no intention to do so,” he writes.
