Report: Celtics-Cavaliers will have call to discuss status of trade
With the massive blockbluster that sent Kyrie Irving to the Celtics in exchange for four pieces — including superstar Isaiah Thomas and the 2018 Brooklyn first-round pick — now up in the air after a concerning physical in Cleveland for Thomas, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski has reported that the Cavs and Celtics will discuss the status of the trade on the phone later today.
Sources within the Cavs organization have reportedly described the situation with the 28-year-old Thomas’ injured hip as a ‘very sensitive situation’ and noted that their concerns over his hip, which were revealed in a physical taken on Friday (Thomas then immediately left Cleveland and flew back home), are enough to make them think twice about signing off on this deal.
Thomas has gone through a rehab process this summer, and although the Celtics said that surgery was not necessary for Thomas, Celtics president Danny Ainge did admit that issues with the 5-foot-9 guard’s hip played ‘some’ factor in trading him.
It is also worth noting that the Cavaliers have not officially given Thomas, who is entering a contract year for the Cavaliers, a failing grade for his physical just yet.
Irving, meanwhile, is in Boston today for his physical.
But the Cavaliers essentially have three options: They can accept the deal as is and assume that Thomas is healthy enough to be a legitimate contributor to Cleveland this season. They could ask for more out of the Celtics, such as another player or draft pick, or they could nix the trade entirely and send everybody back to their original teams.
Per NBA rules, the deadline to report and submit to a physical for the players involved in the trade is 10 a.m. Wednesday and the deadline to pass the physical is 10 a.m. Thursday, But they can extend the deadline if both teams mutually agree to extend it.
