Report: Celtics are interested in acquiring Kristaps Porzingis
Update (1:32 p.m.): The New York Daily News reports the Celtics are interested in acquiring Kristaps Porzingis.
The Knicks are reportedly open to trading star forward Kristaps Porzingis, and the Celtics are one of the few teams in the league with the assets to acquire him.
According to The Vertical’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Knicks president Phil Jackson isn’t “ruling out the possibility” of dealing the 7-foot-3 Latvian. Jackson even met recently with Arizona forward Lauri Markkanen, who he’s reportedly thinking about drafting at No. 8 to replace Porzingis. ESPN’s Ian Begley says nobody from the Knicks organization has been in touch with Porzingis since he missed his exit meetings in April.
Porzingis, 21, would be perhaps the most desirable player on the market if available. The No. 4 pick in the 2015 NBA Draft has developed into a franchise cornerstone over the last two seasons, averaging 16.1 points and 7.3 rebounds per contest. The price to acquire him would likely begin with multiple first-round picks, considering he isn’t even a restricted free agent until 2019.
The Celtics, who potentially own seven first-round picks over the next three seasons, would be able to put together an enticing package without forfeiting their entire future. Boston could center its offer around this year’s No. 3 overall pick and a future first-rounder, such as Memphis’ selection in 2019 (the Celtics own the pick if it’s No. 9 or greater). The return the Celtics received from the 76ers for this year’s No. 1 pick, either the Lakers’ 2018 first-round selection if it’s within the No. 2 to No. 5 range or the Kings’ or 76ers’ first-round selection in 2019, could come into play as well. Under dire circumstances, the Celtics could also offer Brooklyn’s 2018 first-round pick, wihch is seemingly guaranteed to be a lottery selection.
It would be surprising to see the Knicks trade Porzingis to a division rival. But if the Celtics offer the best package, it would be difficult for Jackson to say no.
