And then there were five?
Celtics guard Marcus Smart officially becomes a free agent on July 1, and according to a report, there are four other teams vying for his services.
According to Yahoo NBA insider Jordan Schultz, the Mavericks, Bulls, Pacers and Suns are all interested in Smart, and so are the Celtics. The Mavericks, he writes, will only consider the Dallas native at the right price.
What that price is remains to be seen. Smart told ESPN after the playoffs that he believe he’s worth more than $12-$14 million a year, but with money less plentiful this offseason after two years of big deals, it’s not clear if he’ll be forced to settle for something in the range of $8-$10 million annually.
Smart average 10.2 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 4.8 assists last year and is already on record that he believes he’ll return to Boston.
