Rajon Rondo brought up video tribute in heated spat with Isaiah Thomas

Celtics legend Paul Pierce may have had his day and his tribute videos this past Sunday, but the neverending video tribute drama continued on Valentine’s Day.

But with zero involvement with the Celtics or TD Garden’s jumbotron.

It actually came in a meeting between the Lakers and Pelicans down in New Orleans, and with a confrontation and eventual ejections for Rajon Rondo and Isaiah Thomas.

Matched up against one another late in the first quarter, and with the veteran Rondo’s memory long, Rondo came up and clearly knocked Thomas upstairs.

Despite seemingly getting his money’s worth with a flagrant foul on the play, Rondo went right back at the 5-foot-9 Thomas for more of the same. Thomas decided to respond with some words and counters of his own, and from there, things got more than heated for the two ex-Celtics.

Claiming that he was hit in the face three times before he finally had enough, Thomas said that Rondo also brought up the video tribute drama Thomas had with Pierce last month during their confrontation.

“Whatever reason, he’s an upset guy about me,” Thomas said of Rondo. “I don’t know what it is, but it’s fine. He kept bringing the tribute up, when I was the one that shut the tribute down. I’m far past that. For me to be ejected was uncalled for.”

Rondo’s trash talk should not come as a surprise to anybody.

After all, Rondo, who was Pierce’s teammate for seven seasons, had a strong take on Thomas’ desire (and apparent need) for a video tribute when the Pelicans visited Boston last month.

“What has he done?” Rondo, part of the 2008 C’s team that won the title, asked reporters when giving his take on the C’s honoring Thomas. “This is the Boston Celtics. This isn’t the Phoenix Suns, no disrespect to any other organization, but you don’t hang conference titles. Do we hang going to the conference finals? What do we hang here?”

Given the way Rondo targeted him almost immediately, Thomas had no doubts that Rondo came at him with an agenda already ‘written out’ to go at him physically.

“[Rondo> said what he said, I laughed it off,” Thomas said. “It was what it was. I’m the one that stopped the video tribute from happening because I wanted Paul Pierce to have his full night. I didn’t want to take nothing from him. I know he played on Paul Pierce’s team. He’s gonna always have Paul Pierce’s back, which is fine. I didn’t lose sleep over it. It was obvious it continued to be brought up with what happened tonight.”

No word as to whether or not this will be included in Thomas’ eventual video tribute in Boston.
