Paul Pierce praises Jayson Tatum’s potential
Now, the rookie and No. 3 overall pick has earned the stamp of approval from a Celtics legend, who officially retired with the franchise Monday—Paul Pierce.
While visiting the Boston Public Garden, Pierce, who spent 19 years in the NBA and won a championship with Boston in 2008, went to Instagram Live to show himself near the water, taking pictures with fans. While mingling, the 10-time All-Star gave his take on Tatum, according to MassLive.
“Man, that Tatum kid, he’s going to be real,” Pierce said. “As long as he keeps working. He’s got a lot of the tools. I like that kid.”
While Pierce has taken a liking to Tatum, the feeling appears to be mutual.
In the days leading up to the draft, Tatum was bombarded with comparisons to Pierce, as it looked more and more likely that Boston would draft the small forward out of Duke. Tatum told MassLive in a recent interview that Pierce was one of his “favorite players.”
“Just his ability, his footwork, and his ability to create his own shot,” Tatum said in the interview. “He’s not the most athletic guy, and neither am I.”
Pierce also seems to like Boston’s chances next year to win the Eastern Conference. The veteran voiced his confidence and appeared to be back with Boston, entirely.
“I like the whole squad, man,” Pierce said. “It’s time to dethrone LeBron (James) in the East. We back. We back.”
Tatum averaged 18.2 points and 8.8 rebounds per game in six games in Utah and Las Vegas this summer. He shot a combined 41-for-92 (44.6 field goal percentage) this summer.
