NBA insider Jeff Goodman: Not all players liked playing with Isaiah Thomas in Boston

NBA insider Jeff Goodman: Not all players liked playing with Isaiah Thomas in Boston

“If the opportunity is there, I would just like to let you know that I’d love to come back.”

That’s what Isaiah Thomas told Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge on the possibility of coming back to the C’s this offseason.

The problem is, there’s a chance not everyone wanted him back.

NBA insider Jeff Goodman discussed Thomas’ time in Boston on the “Good N’ Plenty” podcast on CLNS Media. According to Goodman, the point guard’s playing style may have rubbed off on some Celtics players the wrong way.

“[Thomas] needs the ball in his hands a lot. He had it in Boston. He wasn’t going to get that everywhere else,” Goodman said. “Because, frankly, if he has the ball in his hands there are a lot of other people that are upset. There are other people standing around. And again, it worked in Boston. Although, there were players in Boston that played on that team that did not like playing with Isaiah Thomas.”

Goodman’s right.

At the time, it did work in Boston. In his last year with the C’s Thomas averaged 28.9 points with 5.9 assists, and finished fifth in the MVP vote. Yet despite all the accolades, Goodman explained that the Celtics were never going to ‘back up the Brinks trunk’ like Thomas wanted.

“Isaiah Thomas is right for certain situations. He was perfect in Boston for a couple years because they didn’t have another guy like him that could do some things off the bounce like he could,” Goodman said. “But I still say he was never going to get max money if he was healthy. Didn’t matter. Nobody is going to pay him max money. Would he have gotten a lot more than $2 million for a one-year deal? Sure.”
