CANTON — The falling out that shocked the NBA — with Kyrie Irving demanding out of Cleveland and immediately landing with their top rival in Boston and out from under the shadow LeBron James — the 32-year-old James used Cavaliers Media Day as the venue to finally touch on the trade and the crumbling of their relationship.
Confirming that they have not spoken since Irving was officially traded out of Cleveland and to the Celtics, James seemed like a superstar frustrated with the fact that he couldn’t get through to Irving to mold him the way that he saw fit for his career.
“I tried to do whatever I could do to help the kid out, be the best player he could be — try to help him be a better leader, a better scorer, a better floor general, a better defender, a better passer, getting guys involved, a better leader vocally,” James said, repeatedly calling Irving ‘the kid’ throughout his answer. “I tried to give him everything and give him as much of the DNA as I could. Because, like I told you guys throughout the season, at some point, when he was ready to take over the keys, I was ready to give them to him.”
But the keys to the Cleveland Kingdom, and the on- and off-court tips from one of the game’s greatest players, and everything that comes with it is now out the window.
“I have no advice for him,” the outspoken James told Cleveland reporters. “If my son went to another team and asked for advice, I ain’t giving him [expletive].”
And James, for what it’s worth, still doesn’t know why Irving wanted out.
“I was wondering whether it was something I could have done better to make him not want to be traded,” offered James. “Is it the way that the season finished? Or was it me coming back in the first place? Was it the coaching changes or the GM change?”
And Irving, speaking at Celtics Media Day, would not make anything about it public.
“If we ever have that conversation, I don’t think it’s for anybody else besides me and [James],” Irving acknowledged. “It’s not anybody’s business. It’s between two men.”
The first chance for that in-person conversation will come on Oct. 17 when Irving and the Celtics begin their season against LeBron’s Cavs in Cleveland.
But if it does indeed happen, there’s a good chance we’ll never know it.
