Kyrie Irving’s “Uncle Drew” co-stars knew he was getting traded to the Celtics before him.
In an interview with Boston.com’s Kevin Slane, Irving spells out what went down Aug. 22, 2017, when Boston agreed in principle to send him to the Cavaliers for Isaiah Thomas and other parts. Irving says his cast members got alerts on their phones, and told him in the van.
“They were like, ‘Congrats, man, you just got traded,’” Irving said. “And I was like, ‘What? What do you mean?’”
While the timing of the trade may have been a surprise, Irving can’t be shocked Cleveland decided to deal him. He asked to be traded last summer, reportedly even threatening to sit out the season with knee surgery if he wasn’t moved.
The trade wasn’t made official until one week later, due to concerns over Thomas’ medicals. Irving says his agent informed him of the news while the cast was shooting a dance scene in a nightclub. Afterwards, Irving admits to briefly walking off the set.
“I kind of had to decompress,” Irving said. “Then I went back in and finished up our dancing.”
Getting back to dancing is never a bad strategy.
