Kyrie Irving rumors: Celtics reportedly expect Irving to sign with other team in NBA free agency

Earlier this year, Kyrie Irving demanded everyone wait until July 1 to ask him about his free agency plans. But it seems like the Celtics won’t have to wait until the Summer Solstice to know about their mercurial star’s intentions. He’s already good as gone, according to multiple reports.

The authority on NBA rumor mongering, Adrian Wojnarowski, said on ESPN Monday the Celtics expect Irving to sign elsewhere once free agency begins in a couple of weeks. “The Celtics are really concerned, almost to the point of resignation, that Kyrie Irving is going to leave them. It changes the dynamic,” Wojnarowski said.

The Celtics’ feelings of fatalism are understandable, since Irving has “essentially ghosted” on them, according to the Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach. He says there’s been little communication between the two sides in recent weeks.

While Irving hasn’t made any public comments about his status since the season ended, he appears to be preparing for a move elsewhere. Last week, Irving fired his longtime agent, and reportedly wants to sign with Roc Nation. The president of Roc Nation, Michael Yormark, is the twin brother of Nets CEO Brett Yormark. Roc Nation’s founder, Jay-Z, sold his minority stake in the Nets in 2013.

With Anthony Davis now in Los Angeles, Irving could also still be in play for the Lakers

Irving’s apparent unhappiness in Boston is mystifying, but he isn’t giving any indications he wants to re-sign, as he proclaimed in October. Danny Ainge also didn’t sound optimistic about his chances of retaining Irving in his pre-free agency press conference.

The Athletic’s main NBA Insider –– there are layers here, people –– Shams Charania reports Irving and the Celtics could meet this week. That makes sense, since the NBA Draft is Thursday, and one would imagine the Celtics want some clarity about their star guard before the night begins.

Judging by recent indications, the meeting might not be very long.
