In his exit interview with the media, Marcus Smart was quick to shoot down the idea Kyrie Irving killed the Celtics chemistry over the course of the 2018-19 season. He instantly said it was “bulls—,” hitting on the uniqueness of Irving’s situation.
But it appears some disagree with Smart’s stance on the Celtics all-star guard.
According to Jeff Goodman of Stadium, at least one Celtic had a hard time dealing with Irving. And the player didn’t say this in the aftermath of Boston’s disappointing playoffs finish. Per Goodman’s report, this came earlier in the year.
“Everyone respects his talent, but he’s hard to play with,” the Celtics player said. “It’s all about him.”
That player could be the only one on the Celtics roster who had a tough time playing with Irving. We can infer more than one Celtic had issues, but nothing has officially been surfaced.
However, this anonymous player wasn’t the sole individual in the organization who felt Irving had a negative impact on the team. Goodman also reports someone in Celtics organization thought the Celtics guard had an impact on chemistry, thus contradicting Smart’s defense.
“He takes the air out of the locker room,” another anonymous Celtics source said. “And you just never know what you’re going to get with him.”
