Kobe Bryant issues challenge to Isaiah Thomas
If getting traded by the team he helped recruit two star talents to less than two months before the start of the season wasn’t enough motivation for Celtic-turned-Cavalier Isaiah Thomas, a challenge from NBA legend Kobe Bryant should do the trick.
In his #MembaMentality challenge, released on Kobe Day and in which Bryant issues challenges meant for athletes and other influential figures to push themselves beyond their boundaries (and coincides with the release of Kobe’s new shoes), the five-time NBA champion issued a simple-yet-daunting challenge for the 28-year-old Thomas for his first season in Cleveland: make the All-NBA First Team.
It’s a tall order for the 5-foot-9 Thomas, who made the All-NBA Second Team this past season despite posting the league’s third-best points per game (28.9), and finishing with one of the most efficient seasons among all NBA superstars. It should be worth noting that Thomas’ exclusion from the All-NBA First Team last season was not a product of anything he did or didn’t due, but rather largely due to straight-up incredible seasons from fellow guards James Harden and Russell Westbrook, the only two players that averaged more points for their respective teams than Thomas did for the Celtics in 2016-17.
Thomas, who has not tweeted since the trade became official on Tuesday, and recently unfollowed the Celtics on Instagram, liked the tweet from Bryant.
