Klay Thompson says Celtics are Warriors' biggest threat this season

The hype around the Celtics isn’t just constrained to the corridors of Interstate 495. It’s stretched all the way to the Oracle Arena in Oakland, where the defending NBA champion Warriors play their home games.

In an interview with NBC Sports Bay Area, Golden State guard Klay Thompson said he thinks the Celtics are the biggest obstacle between the Warriors and their third consecutive NBA title.

“I like the team out East in Boston,” Klay Thompson said at Warriors Media Day. “They’ve got a very nice young team. One through five — they’ve got a team that kind of mirrors ours, as far as their length, guys who can shoot and play defense, and an unselfish way about things. So I think that they are going to be a team to reckon with.”

It seems like the stars are aligning for a Celtics-Warriors June showdown –– at least in late September before any games have even been played. Kyrie Irving told ESPN’s Jackie MacMullan last week he believes the C’s can oust Golden State in a seven-game series.

“Can we beat Golden State in a seven-game series? Yes,” he said. “”Because of who we have, and what we’re establishing here, not just for this season, but hopefully for the next few years, something that’s pretty special.”

For what it’s worth, the Celtics have played the Warriors tough in recent years, winning three of their last six meetings. One of the first coming out parties for the Brad Stevens-led Celtics came in December 2015, when they took the Warriors to double overtime at the T.D. Garden.

Last season, the Celtics defeated the Warriors in Oakland in November, before falling to them in a January rematch.
