Josh Jackson reportedly refuses to work out for Celtics
When the Celtics acquired the No. 3 pick in the NBA Draft last week, they were immediately linked to Kansas forward Josh Jackson. But it seems as if Celtics general manager Danny Ainge wants to keep his options open.
According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, Jackson hasn’t worked out for the Celtics yet. Chad Forde of ESPN added to the report, saying Jackson refuses to work out at the Celtics’ facility unless they guarantee him they’re going to select him at No. 3. Apparently, that guarantee hasn’t been made.
Jackson, who only shot 37.8 percent from beyond the arc and 56.6 percent at the free throw line his freshman season, has holes in his offensive campaign. In an interview with Trenni & Tomase Saturday, the Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor compared him to a forward version of Marcus Smart, a plus-defender who struggles to score consistently.
Over the weekend, ESPN’s Jeff Goodman said Duke forward Jayson Tatum would be the best fit for the Celtics at No. 3. “I would take Jayson Tatum,” he said Sunday on Giardi & Bradford. “Jayson Tatum is a Paul Pierce type player. Not as athletic, but he can score the ball. He’s 6-foot-8, he’s got an unbelievable step-back jumper.”
The Celtics dealt away the No. 1 pick to the 76ers, acquiring this year’s No. 3 selection and a future first-round pick. Boston will receive the Lakers’ 2018 selection if it’s within the No. 2 to No. 5 range. If it isn’t, the Celtics will receive either the Kings’ or 76ers’ first-round selection in 2019, depending on which is slotted lower
Armed with potentially seven first-round picks over the next three years, the Celtics are also in position to make a big splash. It was reported Tuesday the C’s are interested in acquiring Knicks star forward Kristaps Porzingis.
