Celtics forward Jayson Tatum has turned heads since his first NBA game, and the 19-year-old has finally received credit for it as the East’s Rookie of the Month for the month of December.
Tatum averaged 14.6 points (with a 52.9 field goal percentage, and 45.1 three-point percentage), 5.9 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 32.0 minutes in 17 December games. His 14 games with 10 or more points led all NBA rookies during that span.
“He’s good,” Celtics coach Brad Stevens said of Tatum. “He’s a good player. I mean, I think he’s got a chance to be really good, so hopefully he stays the course.”
The No. 3 overall pick from the 2017 NBA Draft, Tatum ranks third in the NBA with a 46.8 percentage from beyond the arc, and his 579 points are the fifth-most by a Celtics rookie through the team’s first 41 games in franchise history.
This is Tatum’s first Rookie of the Month honor, and makes him the first C’s rookie to capture the honor since Marcus Smart in February 2015.
