Jayson Tatum is dominating, but what does it mean?
Jayson Tatum was better than Lonzo Ball Saturday night, and Markelle Fultz sprained his ankle. It’s all coming together for the Celtics. (For more on Fultz’s injury, click here.)
While Ball, the second overall pick in this year’s draft, did manage a triple-double (11 points, 11 assists, 11 rebounds) in his team’s Las Vegas Summer League loss to the Celtics. And in another game, Fultz’ summer league stint came to an abrupt end while suffering a high ankle sprain for the Sixers team.
But it continues to be Tatum who shines the brightest in Vegas.
The third overall pick scored 27 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to continue his positive first impression. This follows a three-game stint in the Utah Summer League in which Tatum averaged 18.7 points and 9.7 rebrounds per game.
So, what does it mean?
Sometimes it’s easier to get wrapped up in the Summer League stats and make misguided predictions. Three of the top four scorers in last year’s Las Vegas Summer League — Trey Lyles, Jordan McRae and Kris Dunn — didn’t really do much to carry over the momentum to the regular season. Terry Rozier was the summer league star for the Celtics, averaging 19 points per game in Utah last season, and he really didn’t emerge into a valued commodity until the final month.
Last year, Jaylen Brown also stood out in summer league play, averaging 16 points per game while earning All-NBA summer league second-team honors. When the summer season was all said and done, here were the top performers last year:
Tyus Jones, Minnesota Timberwolves
Jordan McRae, Cleveland Cavaliers
Bobby Portis, Chicago Bulls
Ben Simmons, Philadelphia 76ers
Alan Williams, Phoenix Suns
Jaylen Brown, Boston Celtics
Thon Maker, Milwaukee Bucks
Kelly Oubre Jr., Washington Wizards
Norman Powell, Toronto Raptors
Tyler Ulis, Phoenix Suns
Regarding Tatum, it’s more about how he’s doing it. (To view highlights, click here.)
“He reminds me of Paul Pierce,” said Celtics assistant coach Walter McCarty, who is serving as the team’s summer league head coach.
