It’s hard to fathom that any sentient human beings could be outraged, or even remotely upset, about Jaylen Brown’s proclamation about the Celtics winning the five championships over the next six years. But some curmudgeons, such as our very own Glenn Ordway, are criticizing the young forward for his apparent overconfidence.
They must have missed the portion of the interview in which Brown laughs, tugs on his shorts and looks down at the ground while he’s making this prediction.
In a video interview with Bleacher Report’s Taylor Rooks, Brown is asked about how many rings he envisions wearing when he is 28 years old. The 2016 first-round draft choice is currently 22. “I’m not going to jinx myself, but—what’s that, six years?—I’m gonna go ahead and say five or six,” Brown says with a smirk. “I don’t play to lose,” he says. “I’m gonna give it a five.”

This is not the first time Brown or players on the Celtics have publicly been bullish about their title aspirations this season. In September, point guard Kyrie Irving said the C’s could beat the defending champion Warriors in a seven-game playoff series.
When Brown was asked about his bold statement, he explained he’s expressing support for his team. “People misconstrue confidence and arrogance. I’m not being arrogant, because we’re gonna have to take the steps to be the team we say we’re gonna be, right?,” Brown said. “It’s because we’ve got the mindset of a champion, and I think that’s where it starts.”
The Celtics are currently 6-4, but their early season struggles have absolutely nothing to do with comments Brown or any players make to reporters. They’re still trying to integrate Gordon Hayward into the lineup, and as Terry Rozier’s reported trade request illustrates, there’s lots of work Brad Stevens must do in order to get his team to mesh.
Meanwhile, Brown is showing confidence in himself. Athletes aren’t automatons. His statement is harmless.
