With multiple members of the 2020 NBA free agency class signing extensions before the Celtics and Jaylen Brown came to terms, it looked like Boston would have to match the highest offer the wing would receive as a restricted free agent.
The Celtics were still in a good position to keep him, but it could’ve cost them a bit more money to keep him in town. And it looks like there was at least one team who would’ve tried to complicate things.
According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Hawks were interested in pursuing either Brown or Indiana Pacers big man Domantas Sabonis, who also signed an extension before the regular season started.
Trae Young and John Collins have both shown promise in Atlanta. Adding a wing like Brown might be what they need to take the next step as a franchise. For now, they’ll have to look elsewhere.
