Jaylen Brown reacts to Gordon Hayward joining Celtics: ‘We’re gonna be a really good team this year’
When the Celtics pulled off some Fourth of July fireworks and acquired All-Star forward Gordon Hayward, some Celtics players took to Twitter to welcome their new teammate.
Jaylen Brown reacted to the deal on Wednesday before the Celtics’ summer league contest against the Spurs.
“It’s great for the Celtics,” Brown told reporters. “It just means we’re gonna be a really good team this year – we’re supposed to be on paper at least, and we just gotta come out and execute.”
Brown, who was recently selected to the All-Rookie Second Team, said that the Hayward acquisition is a sign of “exciting times” in Boston and spoke of a strong Celtics culture.
“It’s a city with a team with a lot of history,” Brown said. “A big legacy and big shoes to fill so it’s a team that wants to win and doesn’t settle for less. And I think that [Hayward] wanted to be a part of that.”
While Al Horford and Isaiah Thomas grabbed headlines, Brown noted that he too was at the team’s practice facility when Hayward visited. He said that he was asked to be there, and spent 10-15 minutes chatting with Hayward. Brown stopped short of saying that he was a major part of the pitch, though.
“He was gonna make the decision best for him regardless,” Brown said.
Following a whirlwind of rumors and speculation surrounding his decision, Hayward announced that he was coming to Boston in a Players’ Tribune essay at around 9 o’clock on Tuesday. Was there a big group text celebration among the team at that point?
“Yesterday I was asleep,” Brown said. “I didn’t check my phone.”
NBA Twitter, Celtics fans and reporters were wide awake, though, as Boston managed to pick up one of this off-season’s most prized free agents. In the past two summers, the Celtics have nabbed the No. 3 pick in the draft (Brown and Jayson Tatum) and made a splash in free agency. They may not be done either, as The Vertical’s Chris Mannix reported that Grizzlies big man Marc Gasol could be on the team’s radar.
