Isaiah Thomas has been left ‘scrambling’ after hurtful trade from Celtics
A friend of Isaiah Thomas, the original I.T., Hall of Fame guard Isiah Thomas, dished on the raw feelings of the (maybe) Celtic-turned-Cavalier in the immediate aftermath of this (nearly completed) blockbuster deal between Eastern Conference powerhouses.
“From a basketball standpoint, he and Kyrie Irving, this will be great for both of them,” Isiah Thomas said. “Both will do well. But it really was like a punch in the gut [for Thomas] because it came out of nowhere. Kyrie was expecting a trade, he was prepared for it. And talking to Isaiah the other night, now he’s scrambling, trying to find out where his kids are going to go to school, trying to find a place to live. And it was just so unexpected for [Thomas].”
An All-Star in both of his full seasons with the Celtics, the 28-year-old Thomas was at his best this past season, finishing third in NBA in points per game. Thomas also helped successfully recruit stars Al Horford and Gordon Hayward to Boston for the official start of a championship window that Thomas, who was open about wanting a max deal from the Celtics in 2018, saw himself being a key contributor to for the rest of his career.
That was just the tip of the iceberg when it came to Thomas’ unforgettable time with the Celtics, which also featured him battling through the tragedy of losing his sister right before the start of the 2017 NBA Playoffs, and then playing on a battered hip and pushing the Celtics to the third round of the postseason before his body ultimately collapsed on him.
For the total package to not be good enough for the Celtics undoubtedly hurt the 5-foot-9 guard, and has put the Cavs in a potentially tough spot with a completely new player.
“He said he gave his heart and soul to the Celtics,” Isiah Thomas said of the Celtics’ Thomas and his reaction and feelings to being traded by Danny Ainge. “He gave them everything. It’s a business and we all understand that it’s a business, but to have it happen in such a way for him. I think it really hurt him. I think it’s going to be difficult for him to trust again, to give that trust, that loyalty, that love to another organization.
“I definitely think the Cavs are going to have to do some relationship mending to get him back to the point where he loves being where he’s at,â€ Thomas continued. “Because he’s a small guy and the thing that gets him over is his love and his passion. And if those things are kind of missing a little bit, it’s going to be hard.”
With the trade still up in the air because of issues with Thomas’ physical in Cleveland, the Celtics and Cavaliers have until Thursday to finalize the trade.
