Kyrie Irving told Gordon Hayward he needed to be more aggressive, and the Celtics forward delivered over the weekend in Minnesota, pouring in 30 points for the first time in green.
With Hayward understandably struggling to find his footing barely a year after suffering a gruesome broken leg five minutes into his Celtics career, there had been some concern he wouldn’t rediscover the form that made him an All-Star in Utah.
And while Saturday’s performance in a 118-109 victory was certainly a step in the right direction — Hayward added nine rebounds and eight assists — it’s worth noting just how much better he can be.
It’s easy to forget, but Hayward was on the verge of becoming a superstar during his final season in Utah. He routinely played above the rim with strength and speed, and if you don’t believe me, check out the 2016-17 highlight video below for example after example of what a confident, healthy Hayward looks like.
That’s the player we all came a little closer to seeing on Saturday.
