Danny Ainge unsure if there’s a move that could encourage Kyrie Irving to re-sign with Celtics

Danny Ainge wants all the answers to the Kyrie Irving situation just like everyone else. But, like everyone else, he does not, which he expressed on Wednesday during his first media availability since suffering a minor heart attack in Milwaukee when the Celtics played the Bucks in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

“I’d like to have answers to all your questions right now, that would be nice,” the Celtics president of basketball operations said. “Then I could relax even more. But, it’s a busy time of year. There’s a lot of unanswered questions with free agency and (the) draft and all the players on our roster, all of that.”

One of the many unanswered questions surrounding Irving, specifically, is whether or not the Celtics are still on the list of teams he’s considering. Between a trip to Los Angeles and the latest rumor that he’s going to the Nets, it seems like Boston is the team mentioned least frequently.

While Ainge can’t confirm that the “wedding” is still on between the C’s and Irving, he did express conversations are ongoing and he has “not received (the) indication,’ that Irving does not want to extend his career in Boston.

But the longer Irving delays the process, the harder it becomes for Ainge and the front office to build their team. And the Celtics have quite a bit of work to do, especially if their superstar guard doesn’t return.

In the course of the rumors, one idea that’s been thrown around is if the Celtics were to bring in Anthony Davis, Irving would be more inclined to stick around. However, when asked if there was a move that could make sticking around more appealing for Irving, Ainge didn’t have anything to offer.

“I don’t know the answer to that,” he said. “Yeah, I don’t know that yet.”

That likely means a trade for Davis before free agency starts it out of the question. Unless, of course, Ainge is willing to take a risk — a fairly significant one at that.

“There’s always risk in making deals,” he said. “We’re not afraid of risk. We made a risk by trading for Kyrie. No matter what happens with Kyrie, I’ll never regret that.”
