Could Isaiah Thomas one day return to play for the Celtics? You never know.
In an interview with the Boston Globe prior to Thomas’ Nuggets playing the Celtics Monday, he indicated he reached out to Danny Ainge last summer to say he would welcome a return to Boston.
“I know we left on bad terms with me being traded,” Thomas said. “I wanted them to know that the interest was there. I didn’t know if they were interested, and I wasn’t saying I wanted to come back and be the guy. I was just saying if the opportunity presents itself, just know I’m interested. That’s all it was.”
What about again this summer when Thomas is a free agent again?
“You never know,” Thomas said. “You can’t predict the future. My options are always open for anybody. I’m a Denver Nugget now, but I’m a free agent at the end of the season, and you never know what can happen. Who knows?”
The point guard expanded on this speaking with reporters prior to the game.
“This was some of the most fun times of my career,” he said. “I turned into a superstar here, the world knew my name when I played for the Boston Celtics — not saying they don’t now. But playing for the Celtics changed my whole career, on and off the floor. This city and this organization treated my family with 100 percent respect. And, you know, decisions happen. I mean, I never hold no grudge against anybody.
“You never know what can happen. My options are always open no matter what it is, and I mean if I end up back here at some point, that’ll make the story that much better.”
Thomas hasn’t really played much with the Nuggets this season, so it remains to be seen if he will actually get into the game Monday.
