Celtics waive Jordan Mickey
A move expected since Gordon Hayward announced his plans to sign with the Celtics finally happened late Thursday night, as the Celtics officially waived Jordan Mickey.
Forever on the wrong end of a numbers game during his tenure in Boston, the 23-year-old Mickey played in just 25 games this past season, averaging 1.5 points and 1.4 rebounds per contest in 5:38 of average time on the court per night.
Mickey played in just 41 games in total in his two seasons with Boston, averaging 1.4 points and 4:50 of action per night over that span, and never played more than 19 minutes in any game during his time with the Celtics (Mickey scored a career-high eight points in that game, which came this past season in a Nov. 6 loss to the Nuggets).
By waiving Mickey before July 15, the Celtics have freed up another sliver of cap space needed to officially sign and introduce Hayward, with just under $1.5 million cleared by waiving Mickey now. Waiving Mickey could also open the door to the Celtics officially signing 2016 first-rounder and pick-and-stash prospect Guerschon Yabusele to an NBA contract.
One of two question marks on the C’s roster for next season, the Celtics will now need to make a decision on Demetrius Jackson before his $1.35 million contract becomes completely guaranteed on July 15.
