The Celtics could have been in the mix for acquiring Kawhi Leonard last offseason, but ultimately they weren’t big factors with him being dealt from the Spurs to the Raptors.
Now, it’s being shown why.
According to Yahoo! Sports’ Chris Haynes, Leonard will opt out of his deal with Toronto and become a free agent, but the Raptors are still the favorites to re-sign him. With that being said, other teams still have the chance to blow the Finals MVP away and one of those teams could be the Clippers.
This is apparently why the Celtics didn’t go all-in for Leonard.
According to ESPN’s Kevin Arnovitz, both the Celtics and 76ers feared he would go to L.A. this offseason and that is why they didn’t offer as much as the Spurs wanted.
Ultimately, he was traded to Toronto last summer along with Danny Green for DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Poeltl and a first-round pick. It remains to be seen what Leonard will do this summer, but now we know why the Celtics weren’t big factors last year at this time.
