Celtics rumors: Team considering trading up for Darius Garland

With the 2019 NBA Draft just two days away, teams are scrambling to figure out their game plans. That continued when ESPN NBA Draft analyst Jonathan Givony put out a series of tweets midday Tuesday regarding Darius Garland.

“Darius Garland will conduct a last-minute workout in Tarrytown with the New York Knicks tomorrow, a source told ESPN,” Givony wrote. “Garland is in serious consideration for the No. 3 pick. Minnesota, Boston, Chicago are teams looking at potentially trading up to No. 4 with Garland in mind.”

The Celtics have three first-round picks in Thursday’s draft: Nos. 14, 20, and 22. Though that could change, should the team try to trade up for Garland. But if the Celtics plan to do so, it will likely need to happen sooner rather than later, as Boston isn’t the only team considering that option.

“Source: The Atlanta Hawks have been aggressively exploring trade packaging the No. 8 and 10 picks to move up in the draft,” wrote Givony. Reportedly, the Hawks’ offer to the Knicks for the No. 3 pick was turned down, but the Pelicans are considering potentially trading the No. 4 pick for the same offer.

Givony added, “Source: Garland is back at 100% after knee surgery in November and will be ready to play summer league, pending approval from the team that drafts him.”

Garland only competed in five games his freshman season at Vanderbilt, due to a meniscus injury in his left knee. Though his season was cut short, he made those five games count, averaging 16.2 points, while shooting 53.7 percent from the field, and 47.8 percent behind the 3-point arc.

Although his college career was short lived, Givony reports that the 6-foot-2 Nashville native has been busy gaining more experience.

“Garland has had a number of impressive private workouts recently with the LA Lakers, Cleveland Cavaliers and Chicago Bulls,” Givony wrote.

And as of Wednesday, he will add the Knicks to that list too. According to Givony, Garland may miss the NBA Draft media session which starts at 11 a.m. tomorrow, due to the logistics of the workout.
