The Celtics have reportedly extended a $6 million qualifying offer to Marcus Smart, according to NBA reporter Keith Smith.
As a restricted free agent, Smart has options once free agency starts on July 1, including testing the open market, taking the qualifying offer or negotiating with the Celtics.
“My heart’s here,” Smart said during his exit interview after the season. “I want to be here. I love this city. I love this team. I love the atmosphere it gives off. I’ve been here for four years. My heart’s here, but there’s definitely going to be some factors that go into it.”
He also said Brad Stevens and Danny Ainge are “already planning” to bring him back.
This qualifying offer is the first step in doing just that.
