Celtics eagerly await Gordon Hayward’s decision
The Celtics — with Danny Ainge joined by Al Horford, Isaiah Thomas, and Brad Stevens — spent their Sunday making their pitch to star free agent Gordon Hayward.
It was a tour that featured a stop at Fenway Park, with a center field jumbotron message welcoming both Gordon and his wife Robyn, and a montage that showed key Celtics moments, as well as other NBA players talking about playing in Boston. The video also featured a message from Boston sports legend David Ortiz.
In essence, they wisely used their trip to Fenway as a means to swing for the fences on the 27-year-old.
Now, as Hayward finishes up his round of visits with the Jazz coming to his California home today, the Celtics and Heat must wait.
But for how long?
According to the Boston Herald, Hayward plans to make his decision tomorrow or Wednesday, but a source has said that Hayward could make his decision known to teams by tonight. That report, however, was met with a conflicting report from the Boston Globe‘s Adam Himmelsbach, who noted that Hayward is not ‘locked into any timeline’ and could take his time with this.
You’d have to imagine that the Celtics’ preference would be Hayward making a decision sooner than later, as a decision to return to the Jazz or sign with the Heat would allow the Celtics to focus on potential backup plans, such as Danilo Gallinari.
Hayward, who had his first All-Star team this past season, is seeking a max contract after averaging a career-best 21.9 points per game for the Jazz last season.
