Walter McCarty is getting his big chance.
According to ESPN.com, the Celtics assistant coach will be announced as the University of Evansville’s new men’s basketball coach Friday. McCarty has been an assistant with the Celtics since 2013, having also guided the team’s Summer League team last offseason.
McCarty is a native of Evansville, having gone to Harrison High in the city prior to playing collegiately at Kentucky under Rick Pitino. He would rejoin Pitino as an assistant coach at the University of Louisville from 2007-10. The former forward also played 10 seasons for the Celtics.
Other candidates reportedly in the mix for the Evansville job were former NBA player, and St. Louis University assistant, Calbert Cheaney, along with Valparaiso assistant David Ragland.
