Celtics acquired Kevin Garnett 10 years ago today
The Red Sox have made plenty of blockbuster deals on the last day in July, which happens to be the MLB trade deadline. But the most significant transaction on this date in Boston sports history wasn’t announced in the bowels of Fenway Park.
It was announced at the T.D. Garden, where Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge introduced the new Big Three for the first time.
The Celtics officially acquired Garnett on July 31, 2007 –– 10 years ago today. Boston sent over Al Jefferson, Gerald Green, Ryan Gomes, Sebastian Telfair, Theo Ratliff and its 2009 first-round pick to the Timberwolves in exchange for the future Hall of Famer’s services.
Though it’s difficult to imagine now, Garnett’s arrival wasn’t unanimously applauded at first. Some were leery of giving up Jefferson, who at the time was a blossoming young star. Garnett also originally refused to come to Boston, with his agent telling ESPN the city was “not a destination” his client was “interested in pursuing.”
At the press conference, Garnett addressed his agent’s comments, and put to rest any doubts about his commitment to the Celtics.
“I guess at the end of the day, I’m loyal to a point where I felt like if someone was loyal to me, then I have no problem with that,” he explained. “But when that changes, it’s pretty easy for me. So after that, going through those stages, which was really tough, I thought this was probably my best opportunity at winning a ring.”
The Celtics went on to win 66 games in 2007-08 and ousted the Lakers in the NBA Finals. Boston never lost a playoff series with Rajon Rondo, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, Garnett and Kendrick Perkins in the starting lineup together.
Though the original Garnett trade will go down as an all-time coup, the trade that sent him out of town wasn’t too shabby, either. The Nets sent four first-round picks to the Celtics for Garnett and Pierce in 2014, clearing the way for Boston to quickly jump back into postseason contention. Ainge also turned a trade exception that came the Celtics’ way into Isaiah Thomas, who was acquired at the NBA trade deadline in 2015.
The Red Sox, or any baseball team, would be hard-pressed Monday to pull off a series of moves that work out as well as those.
