Caris LeVert injury: Celtics forward Gordon Hayward expresses support for Nets guard after gruesome ankle injury

On impact, the injury looked every bit as bad as one Celtics fans won’t soon forget. But the good news for Nets guard Caris LeVert is that he won’t require surgery and might actually return this season.

Either way, Gordon Hayward will be there for him if he needs it.

A year after Hayward’s Celtics debut ended just five minutes into the season with a gruesome broken ankle, LeVert appeared to suffer the same injury on Monday against Minnesota, leaving teammates in tears.

Though the news was better on Tuesday – no broken bones, and minimal ligament damage – Hayward still expressed support.

“I didn’t see it live,” Hayward told reporters, including A. Sherrod Blakely of NBC Sports Boston. “I hate to see that. I heard the timeline is a little better, but still . . . he was playing really well. You hate injuries for anybody. It’s tough.”

LeVert was injured attempting a chase-down block in the closing seconds of the first half on Monday when he collided with Jeff Teague and landed awkwardly, dislocating his ankle in the process. He left the court with his head wrapped in a towel, in obvious pain.

It was a brutal break for the third-year guard, who had emerged as Brooklyn’s best player while averaging over 18 points a game.

“For sure, anytime somebody goes through a major injury you feel for them,” Hayward said. “And what I’ve been through, I know first-hand what it’s like.

“If he ever needs to reach out, he knows how to get ahold of me.”
