The Celtics cleared a roster spot at Thursday’s NBA trade deadline by sending guard Jabari Bird, sidelined all season after a domestic violence arrest in September, to the Atlanta Hawks, who plan to waive him, per multiple reports.
The deal, reported by the Boston Globe, will likely be for nothing — perhaps a top-55 protected draft pick, per NBA insider Keith Smith — but it frees up a roster spot for the Celtics to pursue a player on the buyout market.
Bird, 24, was arrested in September after allegedly assaulting his girlfriend and threatening to kill her. He was recently charged with witness intimidation, as well, and it’s possible he never plays in the NBA again.
