Boston Celtics rookie Grant Williams appears to have picked official jersey number

The Celtics rookies have already won over many Boston fans, but with Summer League coming to a close last Saturday, it means the 2019-20 NBA season is right around the corner.

Before that unfolds, it’s time for the rookies to select their official jersey numbers. Grant Williams was originally given No. 40 by the Celtics, but after careful consideration and a little help from his Instagram followers, he may have decided on his official number.

The No. 22 overall pick was asked “number 12 or 2” on his Instagram story, after wearing No. 2 at Tennessee. However, the young Celtic had done his homework and promptly noted No. 2 is retired from Red Auerbach.

On the other hand, No. 12 is newly available since Terry Rozier signed with the Hornets, and it appears Williams will likely take that as his official number with the team. Though, Rozier isn’t the only one who has previously worn No. 12. It is the most-used number in team history, with 33 players dawning No. 12 at some point, including Jerry Sichting, Dominique Wilkins, Chris Herren, and Ricky Davis.

The 6-foot-10 power forward helped the Celtics go 4-1 during Summer League, averaging 13 points and six rebounds, while shooting 47 percent from the field, which helped him earn a deal to stay in Boston for the next four years.
