Bill Russell is one of the most socially outspoken athletes of all-time. And he’s voicing his support for the Eagles in the midst of their battle with President Trump.
Early Wednesday morning, Russell’s verified Twitter account posted a message saying the Eagles should be thankful Trump disinvited them from the White House. The posting also featured an image of Russell taking a knee, while wearing the Presidential Medal of Freedom he was awarded by Barack Obama in 2011.
“The best thing that happened to @Eagles since winning the #superbowl is @realDonaldTrump uninviting them to the #WhiteHouse,’’ the 11-time NBA champion tweeted. ““Not 1 #Eagles player took a knee. It’s about social injustice period!’’

Russell went on to condemn Trump for obfuscating the message of players who kneel during the anthem. “.@realDonaldTrump wages war on @NFL players for being unpatriotic & disrespectful to flag & country when he him self (The President) does not know the words to our national anthem. That is disrespectful. Its about injustice!,” he wrote.
In a statement, Trump implied Eagles players kneeled for the anthem last season, even though none of them did. Wide receiver Torrey Smith lambasted Trump for canceling the event, saying his explanation was full of lies.
Eagles quarterback Nick Foles was reportedly the only player confirmed to make the trip.
Instead of hosting the Eagles, Trump held an eight-minute patriotic rally to celebrate America. He appeared to forget the words to “God Bless America” during the proceedings.
