A plethora of professional athletes showed support for Celtics forward Gordon Hayward after he fractured his ankle during the first few minutes of the NBA opener Tuesday.
But perhaps the most meaningful message, at least symbolically, came from someone who played in his last NBA game nearly 50 years ago.
Celtics legend Bill Russell lent support to Hayward from his verified Twitter account. “@gordonhayward want you to know you are a #Celtic & you are not alone, we #bleedgreentogether,” the 11-time champion said.
The Celtics huddled for several minutes after Hayward fell to the floor. Many players on the Cavaliers appeared shaken as well. LeBron James and Isaiah Thomas reportedly visited Hayward in the locker room before he departed back to Boston.
It appears as if the entire NBA will be cheering Hayward on as he begins his rehab. Some extra encouragement from Russell could send him over the top.
